Great news for Malaysia as the Kuala Lumpur & Penang Michelin Guide 2023 has been announced on December 13. This is the first edition guaranteed to excite food enthusiasts and foodies from Malaysia, Singapore and Worldwide.
The F&B industry in Malaysia is also abuzz with this, as it has been a lifetime dream for Malaysia to have its own Michelin Guide, as Singapore and Thailand already have theirs.
Kuala Lumpur & Penang Michelin Guide 2023
The Bib Gourmand and Star Revelation will be announced at a press conference held at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, this December 13 and will be the much-talked-about foodie event of the year.

The Bib Gourmand will list restaurants that offer “good quality, good value cooking.” All the eateries will be subjected to the same criteria practised worldwide, where anonymous Michelin inspectors review the cuisine and evaluate only the quality of the dishes using their five criteria.
The criteria cover the quality of the ingredients used, mastery of cooking techniques, the harmony of the flavours, expression of the chef’s personality in the cuisine and consistency, both over time and across the entire menu. The location, decor, service and available facilities are not part of the selection criteria.
There will also be an invitation-only gala dinner to celebrate the results of the Michelin Guide. Guests will be feted to a six-course dinner showcasing local ingredients prepared by a line-up of chefs from Macau, Singapore, France and Malaysia.
Three chefs from restaurants which have already been awarded the coveted Michelin stars will be participating in the event.
- Julien Tongourian from Macau’s three-Michelin-starred Robuchon au Dôme
- Emmanuel Stroobant from Singapore’s two-Michelin-starred Saint Pierre
- Malaysian-born Liew Shiao Khuen or Kwen Liew from France’s one-Michelin-starred Pertinence
The 29-year-old Liew is the first and only Malaysian female chef whose restaurant has been awarded a Michelin star.

Conclusion
This is a superb start for 2023 as travel foodies can explore some of the Michelin Starred restaurants in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. As an old-school food critic, my palate always lies in the street food of Malaysia, but once in a way, I will indulge in some quality restaurant food.
I hope you enjoyed the news of the unveiling of the Kuala Lumpur & Penang Michelin Guide 2023. Hopefully, it will soon expand to other major cities around the country, like Melaka, Ipoh, Kuching Kota Kinabalu and other peninsular cities.
