Melaka Dim Sum at Gajah Berang

Famous Melaka Dim Sum

If you are visiting Melaka and spending a few nights there, I recommend you try the local Melaka Dim Sum at Gajah Berang, at the corner of the local council medan selera stalls. This is possibly one of the best dim sums I have tried in Melaka.

This food review is non-halal, and Chinese dim sum is a highly popular breakfast and supper snack or meal that many people enjoy. So, if you are a huge fan of dim sum, this is one of the must-try places.

Melaka Dim Sum at Gajah Berang

Gajah Berang is located in the Melaka city area, not just in the core town area but on the other side, where fewer people visit. Here, you can find some interesting local food that may impress you.

This street dim sum stall has a little backstory to it, and for those who do not know, they operate in a shop during the day. After closing the shop, the next shift opens the stall at the Gajah Berang food court and sells until the wee hours of the morning.

As we all know, food is very subjective, and the Gajah Berang Chuan Man Siang Dim Sum has been a very popular choice among the local Melaka people. From my regular visits back here, I have learned about this from relatives and somewhat found the taste to be of the old-style dim sum from the 80s era.

For most newer foodies, this may or may not be your cup of coffee, but then again, some people like hotel dim sum, some like cafe dim sum, and ordinary people love market or street vendor dim sum. There are always choices, and we will only learn by exploring the various types of foods.

Overall, the portions, taste, and price all meet the general expectations, and it is some form of supper comfort food here in Melaka. Dim sum is also not easy to find after dark; therefore, it is a ‘rare food find’ in Melaka.

Famous Melaka Dim Sum?

Some locals claim this to be locally famous, while many younger generations seem to have lost contact with real street food. I have eaten this dim sum over twenty times in my life, and I find it very consistent in taste. If you ask me, it’s much better than many of those dim sum places in Petaling Jaya that people say are very good.

Prices are still low in small towns, and a plate of siu mai in 2024 was going for about RM3.80, compared to Petaling Jaya, which sells for around RM5.00 and above per plate. Some people have also said that eating dim sum nowadays is for rich people.

Have you eaten at one of those dim sum restaurants lately? A two-person general breakfast session can cost anywhere from RM40 to RM80! And that’s not even splurging or going all out. Anyway, it’s good to know that smaller cities like Melaka still offer these kinds of choices for supper.

Where is the Dim Sum Stall at Gajah Berang?

It is a corner stall within the Medan Selera Gajah Berang along Jalan Gajah Berang. If you use Waze or Google Maps, search for “Chuan Man Siang Dim Sum” or “Medan Selera MBMB Gajah Berang,” you will be brought right there.

Another popular landmark for this place is Wilson Chicken Rice, a locally famous restaurant that has been in the exact location for over 40 years. Once you find the Medan Selera, turn inside. There is ample parking along the inner road, and you can walk to the dim sum stall.

Conclusion

If you visit this UNESCO World Heritage City and want to try the famous Melaka Dim Sum at Gajah Berang, make sure you go just after dinner, preferably for supper. You can eat there or take away.

Do you know how many bloggers and KOLs are invited to events, restaurants, and hotel reviews, where, in return, they provide all kinds of ‘positive’ articles and reviews for the sake of being invited by other companies? I have been blogging since 2007, so I’ve been there and done that back in those days, and since 2014, I’ve focused on doing my own thing.
