For foodies on their first visit to Kuching and Sarawak, here is a food review of Mee Kwong Cafe, which serves Foochow food in Kuching. While I am not a huge fan of popular or famous places recommended by food influencers, I prefer to follow local Kuching people’s recommendations.
Some of these unknown places need to be highlighted because of their food quality, not the Instagrammable values that many focus on. The places I eat are very local, not tourist-famous, but they provide good Foochow food that is prepared authentically.
Mee Kwong Cafe Foochow Food in Kuching

As I have been visiting Kuching for over 20 years since the early 2000s, I have visited many places where local friends always bring me when I inquire about their favourite spots. And just so you know, Foochow food is one of the lesser-known popular foods in Kuching, as the stronghold is found in Sibu and other smaller towns.
Finding good Foodchow food in Kuching can be tricky, and not everyone will agree with recommended places because everyone has a different taste palate. So, my review is based on an outsider’s point of view, not growing up with this kind of cuisine.
My review style is not detailed like what you may read, and I prefer to let you go and experience this by yourself. Overall, I have to say that Mee Kwong offers many different types of Foochow dishes, and one of my favourites is the Kompia, a special Foochow snack.

As I have dined here numerous times, I have tried many of the local Foochow dishes, namely the Foochow fried noodles, the plain soup noodles, the wine noodles, and the many different styles of Foochow dishes.
For Muslim travellers, this is purely Non-Halal, and for those who do not take alcohol, do not try the noodles as they cook them with cooking wine. The actual and aftertaste can differ slightly, as most non-Sarawakians will experience.

Conclusion
Kuching is indeed filled with unique food, but one needs to discover it. Forget about the common Sarawak Laksa, Kueh Chap and Kolo Mee because those are too mainstream and over-popularised. The other unknown local favourites keep people like me constantly searching for something different.
Discovering Mee Kwong Cafe Foochow food in Kuching is one of the best things I have done. Thanks again to my local Kuchingite, Kevin Nila, who introduced me to many interesting local Sarawak foods. Do follow my website to discover more food from Malaysia and the world.
