A good friend recommended I try Jubilee Ground Hawker Centre in Kuching during one of my many visits, and so here is my story about this fascinating foodie place, which was a nice surprise.
Jubilee Ground is a very local place and is relatively unknown by foodies outside Sarawak. It is so local that even Sarawak foodies may not have heard about this intriguing food spot.
Jubilee Ground Hawker Centre in Kuching
For those who may want to know why it is called this name, Jubliee Ground has a simple history dating back to the early 1980s, when it was known as the Jubilee Field or Padang Jubilee, and the Sarawak football team played here at this field.
I am not sure about the exact history, but a local friend told me that the fans that came here used to sit on the ground as there was no proper seating. Therefore, this is one of the theories for the name Jubilee Ground.
It is said that Jubilee Ground was also built in the 60s and called Jubilee Recreation Ground by the then-Sarawak Governor, Sir Alexander Wadell. Since then, a swimming pool, sports field, and even a hockey stadium have been built around this area.
Anyway, my main objective was to come here and try some of the fantastic, relatively unique tea-time snacks and desserts. Honestly, this was something I did not expect, but it is worth sharing for any foodie who loves to explore.
There are two main things to try at Jubilee Ground Hawker Center: the Belacan Bee Hoon and the unique Ice Kacang, which is something to remember. And if you’re in the mood, order the Kuih Udang (Prawn Cakes) to complement the tea session, but in Sarawak style.
