Batik Air will become the first Malaysian airline to launch direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, by the first quarter of 2026. This will be the fifth airline to serve Dili, with final preparations underway. The flight between Kuala Lumpur and Dili is expected to take approximately four hours.

The air services agreement was signed in June this year, and the Transport Ministry and Malaysian Aviation Commission have approved Batik Air for this route. Discussions on flight schedules, traffic rights, and timing are in the final stages, with operations expected to commence before the Chinese New Year.
Limited regional and international connectivity has hindered Timor-Leste’s economic development, as investors and businesses favour destinations with better transport links. The country is known for its petroleum and coffee exports, and with its ongoing development agenda and plans to join ASEAN, air traffic between Malaysia and Timor-Leste is expected to grow over time.
The route’s viability is confident, as the first group of 31 government-sponsored Timorese students will depart for studies in Malaysia this November, with numbers expected to double next year. Additionally, the Timor-Leste government runs a healthcare program that refers patients to hospitals in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Melaka, further driving demand for the route.
There is also an existing demand for agricultural products, contributing to Timor-Leste’s food security. With Malaysia set to assume the ASEAN chairmanship next year, Batik Air’s entry is expected to enhance tourism, trade, and business between the two countries.
Malaysia’s engagement with Timor-Leste has been strengthened through the Malaysia Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), which has trained over 800 Timorese officials in preparation for the country’s ASEAN membership.
