AirAsia has revived direct flights between Vientiane and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, effective 12 July 2023. This is good news for travellers because the route was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Director of Lao Airlines’ Commercial Department, Noudeng Chanthaphasouk, told the Vientiane Times that flights in this sector were available in the past. However, because of Covid-19, routes were cut and are now re-connected.

AirAsia also operates flights from Vientiane and Luang Prabang to Bangkok, Thailand; therefore, for those planning to explore other areas of Laos, you need to connect via Bangkok. AirAsia also operates flights from Vientiane to Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, Taipei in Taiwan, Penang in Malaysia, and Guangzhou and Kunming in China, according to AirAsia’s website.
News of the flight resumption between Vientiane and Kuala Lumpur is very welcome. It will boost the government’s efforts to reinvigorate tourism, especially as next year is Visit Laos Year 2024.
Under this promotional programme, the government hopes to encourage at least 4.6 million people to take holidays in Laos, generating revenue of US$712 million. It is anticipated that more than half of this number will be foreign nationals, spending at least US$401 million, according to the Laos Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.
Honestly, I would be happy to revisit Vientiane, as my trip here was back in 2009 when AirAsia introduced this new and exciting route directly from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I spent one week travelling around Laos and even visiting Luang Prabang.
